Certification Requirements

Each state’s Department of Education sets the specific requirements for becoming licensed as a teacher. Even though there are individualized requirements by state to become a teacher, there are some general guidelines that cross state lines, including:
You must obtain a bachelor’s degree. While most cases will require you to hold a bachelor’s or master’s in education, alternative certification programs are available in some states that will permit the bachelor’s degree to be obtained in another discipline.
Most teaching programs will require you to have completed a focused program within the area in which you would like to teach. This often involves student teaching within your chosen area.
In addition to obtaining a bachelor’s degree, many states will require you to complete a liberal arts undergraduate program. In some cases, there is a state licensing test you must successfully pass in order to gain your teaching certification.

Alternative Teaching Certification
If you have not obtained a bachelor’s degree in education, you may still be able to be licensed as a teacher with your state. In an effort to attract more professionals into the career, some states offer an alternative certification program. If you have obtained a bachelor’s degree in another discipline, you can apply to a state approved alternative teaching certification program that upon successful completion, will allow you to receive your teaching credential. |
