Teacher Qualifications

In most cases, individuals who desire to become a teacher will obtain a bachelor degree in education from a public or private college or university. Within their degree program, students will specify whether they desire to work in primary or secondary education. Upon graduation will likely be required to pass a state exam, granting them upon successful completion, a teaching license.
In every state, teachers must obtain and maintain an active license. Licenses are granted by the State Board of Education. However, many private schools are exempt from this licensing requirement.
In addition to this traditional pathway to becoming a teacher, more states are offering an alternative certification program in an effort to attract more professionals into the career. Individuals who have obtained a bachelors degree in another discipline can apply to enroll in a state approved alternative certification program. These programs offer concentrated curriculums designed to prepare students for their licensing exams. Upon completion of these programs, individuals should have their teaching accreditations, making them eligible to teach within the state.
In addition to the basic requirements to become a teacher, educators would suggest there are specific personality traits that one should have in order to follow the teaching career path. Teachers must have a strong ability to communicate thoughts, ideas and instructions. They must also be able to inspire trust with their students, parents and colleagues. They must be able to understand and cater to the needs of their students. |
